Girls Varsity Gymnastics vs. Birmingham Unified

Score
RAIDERS: 144.73
BIRMINGHAM UNIFIED: 0

Farmington United Gymnastics added two more victories to their undefeated season by beating Grosse Pointe North on Wednesday 2/6 and Birmingham on Friday 2/15.  FUG scored 143.725 to GPN 140.325. They beat Birmingham scoring a 144.725 to 128.525. The team is now 7-0 as they head into the last dual meet of the season against Plymouth on Wednesday, February 20.

Some notable accomplishments in the Grosse Pointe meet:  Kamini Playle had a great all around score at GPN. She had an 8.55 on vault, 8.275 on bars, 8.925 on beam and 8.525 on floor.  Her scores are starting to climb on all events. This is a great sign as she heads into the regional competition in a few weeks.     Zoe Rasico is hitting her stride as she continues to score well on bars (low eights) and has been averaging an 8.8 on beam her last 2 meets.  Lily Tyler has come back from an ankle injury and posted her season high on vault ( 8.75 and floor (8.45) against Birmingham.

Andrea Ouellette is really improving during her first year.  She has added an extra twist to her vault and is now scoring in the mid eights and is adding more skills on beam and bars.  Sara Lashbrook is starting to score in the mid-eights on beam. Sara Kurkechian is improving on floor scoring in the mid-eights and hitting high sevens on bars while Kristen Fleming is starting to hit eights on vault , beam, and floor.  Maddy Weiner has started to rebound from early injuries and is scoring low eights on floor.

I mention these scores because these girls are on a very good team and often do not realize how good they are in this sport.  A team that averages in the low eights on each event will score a 128-130. This score is very solid and would do well against other teams.  In fact, there have been a few occasions where our B team has beaten an opponents A team. I am really proud of these girls and I want them to know that the coaches recognize their efforts and hard work during the season.  They often get overshadowed as we have a very talented team this year. Hopefully some of them may make it to the state meet by scoring well at the Regional competition on March 2.

On another high note, the team was voted the best “team of the month” for January by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.  This recognition is given to the best team of any winter sport in the state. It is the first time we have been honored in this way. I am happy that the state recognizes what the girls have been accomplishing this season.
